This place is amazing!
By Sergie Magdalin - Jan 22, 2010
And cheap! I work in Pacific Beach so i decided to drop by and try some ciabatta
bread. I tried it and i was sold right there. Bought a whole loaf of ciabatta for
$4.50 and was happy for a whole week! You cannot buy a loaf of ciabatta at Vons or
Ralphs (that's not made that day fresh) for that price. I totally see myself going
here weekly for my bread. So good.

If you love cHallah bread, then you'll love Charlie's. I love cHallah bread and I

"Best Bread" is no joke
By Natan J. - Jan 5, 2007
I first experienced this excellent bread at the Hillcrest farmer's market. Since
then I have not purchased a loaf anywhere else. I especially recommend the squaw
and nine grain. Save some room for visits to the Pacific Beach location as the samples
are enormous (once my sample was half of a large cinnamon roll!) Loaves vary in price
from $4-$6 and weigh as much as 1kg... a solid value. I can't say enough good things...
try it for yourself!

Absolutely Delicious
By Julie C. - May 1, 2006
IThis place is a dream... they have the most wonderful, fresh baked bread (and yummy
cookies!)in San Diego. It is always a friendly atmosphere filled with my locals who
return regularly. They've got a huge assortment of healthy bread... whole grains
and fresh ingredients. They have a lot of samples for you to try and they say that
they will even use your own recipe if you want them to make a specific bread for
you! You will surely love this place (unless you're on Atkins!).. good prices and
they even have a card you can use to earn a free purchase :-)
Healthy Bread?
By James C. - April 17, 2006
Yes, it does exist. They have a sampler table of loaves that they slice for you on
request. They have spread and honey you can taste test until you get full. The bread
weighs alot and is made fresh. They use organic whole grain. Very good price for
the best quality bread.
Best Bread in Town
By Razgar - Mar 5, 2007
They do make the best bread in town. You can find them at the Sunday Farmers market
too. The selection of bread choices is great. If you call ahead they will make special
breads for the holidays Try the bread sticks too. Can not say enough about this place.
I will never be able to eat another bread again.

Pumpkin Walnut. This bread is to die for. If I had to choose food for my last meal,
I'd die carb happy with a tummy full of this delicious bread. I enjoyed a loaf picked
up at the Hillcrest Farmers Market, but I'll DEFINITELY head to Charlie's!!

Rarely is there truth in advertising...
By Mae G. - Feb 19, 2010
Rarely is there truth in advertising, but Charlie's Best Bread is one of the happy
exceptions. I first grabbed a loaf of honey wheat while shopping at People's in OB,
but soon realized that Charlie's was a local operation a mile from my house. It's
tucked into Pacific Plaza, so can be a bit tough to find, but it's well worth the
effort.
I'm not really a bread person and have found other local bakeries - namely
Bread & Cie and Con Pane - to be grossly overrated... But Charlie's really is the
best! I'm a big fan of the honey wheat (with and without sunflower seeds) and the
whole wheat sourdough, and the challah is AMAZING. The staff has always been quick,
friendly and helpful, and the free samples of their delicious wares are a big plus.

Amazing bread & baked goods!
By Erin B. - Jan 19, 2010
I was at Kinko's a couple doors down from Charlie's an got in my car after doing
my business there, spotted the sign that red "Best Bread" I was like, Really!?! Could
this be...
I walk in and it's these two Italian men, seemingly father and son. Son
in his early forties, but one of those guys that really age well. So anyways, I really
love baked goods. They make me feel young an special, and happy. I'm also a really
touchy-feely person when it comes to baked goods. So the first thing that I see when
I walk in is French Bread... the ultimate bread when it's fresh! I touched it. It
was so fluffy, fluffy like I wanted to cut it in half and lay in the middle of it.
Next, I saw the cookies Chocolate Chip, Oatmeal Raisin, yeah yeah yeah I'm sure all
good but I had been on the search for really good Oatmeal Chocolate Chip cookies
for some time. AND I FOUND THEM!!! I was so excited, I was like a kid in a candy
shop but all grown up and it was real life.
I have a friend that is allergic to gluten,
and I saw some wheat-free oatmeal cookies so I picked those up too. My friend said
that they were amazing and went back the next day to get more.
I got to the counter
and they have a tasting station too! The son... asked me if I would like to try anything.
Umm duh! There was so much to choose from, and of course I decided to with the Chocolate
Chip Loaf (not sure what it's really called, but you'll know it when you see it.)
I also got the Nine Whole Grains "Lite" loaf of bread. Gotta try and be health sometimes,
right!?! And it was warm when they handed it to me. It's good, but think I'm going
to get one of those sour doughs next time.
Father and son were very nice. I told them
it was my first time in and new to town, and they were ecstatic that I was there.
Can't wait to go again!

Actually called:
“Charlie’s Best Bread”
by Erin M. - Sep 14, 2006
Not a good place to go if you are on a low-carb diet, but if you don??t care, it
is delicious. You can get healthier options here, I really liked the sugar-free whole-wheat--sunflower-seed
dinner rolls, but you can also get chocolate bread, zucchini bread (not healthy)
and all sorts of other baked goods. They have a lot of vegan options as well. Its
always fresh, and it just smells darn good in the front door.
