History

Founded in 1988 by Charlie Hugenbothan, Charlie’s Best Bread began as a simple storefront in the Bird Rock area before moving to its current location off of Garnet Avenue in Pacific Beach. Famous for attracting customers because they could “smell Charlie’s from a mile away”, the bakery gained a loyal, local clientele before eventually delivering to grocery stores throughout Southern California.

For almost 30 years, we at Charlie’s Best Bread continue to satisfy new and loyal customers by our dedication to quality and the craft of baking. We make our bread with a combination of heart and organic ingredients. Just as bread has been central to the development of cultures all around the world for centuries, our bread continues to bring people of all backgrounds together. You can rest assured that you are receiving the best quality and only the most wholesome ingredients.

As the demand for Charlie’s Best Bread grew, we expanded from the Pacific Beach location to a larger facility in Logan Heights. Whereas the Pacific Beach location would continue to freshly bake all sweets, fresh bread (baguettes, ciabatta, sourdough) and cHallah on a daily basis, the Logan Heights facility would begin to carefully produce the coveted loaves and rounds for the San Diego community. These breads are delivered fresh and packaged to the Pacific Beach location twice-a-day, and the nature of our family-run local business allows special orders to be made on any of our products at any time.

Customer favorites continue to be our Real Sourdough, Nine Whole Grains, and Honey White loaves as well as our various cHallah breads. Our Pacific Beach storefront is famous for their Almond Tart, Blueberry Banana Muffins, White Chocolate Chip Fudge Cookies, and Raspberry Cream Cheese Scones. We also serve the best espresso in town to accompany the best bread in town! All our coffee products are bought from San Diego owned and operated, Café Moto. We feature not only espresso, but also pour-over and homemade cold-brew.

“Charlie’s” is an equal-opportunity employer with employees hailing from many different countries and backgrounds. Charlie’s Best Bread is currently owned by Mexico City native, and our Pacific Beach storefront is managed by Russian native. Together, they continue to make our Pacific Beach location a welcoming café for customers of all backgrounds. The café features free wifi and outdoor seating as well as a state-of-the-art coffee bar. What was once only a place to buy bread and go is now a place to sit, make a friend, and relax awhile. Bread not only feeds us, it brings us together.
Charlie’s Best Bread is open every day of the year from 6am to 7pm, closing only for Christmas and New Year’s Day.
